The Holidays Lights Tree Lighting Ceremony in the Presidio is this Friday, December 7, 2007 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.
This morning I was happy to be out photographing the Presidio Forestry Department hard at work felling an aging cypress tree. This tree was taken down as part of the forest management plan and will make room for new plantings like the healthy young cypress trees in the foreground. I find it incredibly interesting to talk to and photograph people who really know their jobs. These guys are serious professionals and their job is sometimes dangerous, as I saw first hand today when a rope line that helps guide the tree down to a safe location while falling snapped. All was fine though, they attached a new one and brought the 100 foot plus old cypress down gently after some nervous moments (mine not their's). Plus I got to wear a hard hat and learn some new logging lingo. Do you know your notches from your hinges or what a very scary barber chair is?
