Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with Presidio Historian, Randy Delehanty for a couple hours to work on captions for my photo book on the Presidio. He was kind and generous with his knowledge and the two hours we spent together flew by. He told me that in the process of restoring an old club house near Fort Scott they were uncovering stone terraces built by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930's and that I should check it out. The next day I did. The serpentine stone paths wind down to an old tennis club, then down and over a stone bridge above dragonfly creek and around and down to this wall ball court surrounded by coast redwoods. As anyone who knows me knows, I love trees -I was raised (partially) in big tree country in low Sierra Nevada foothills. When I walked onto that shaded quiet court, surrounded by redwoods it felt like the play grounds I used to play on as a kid (although our trees were incense cedars and big sugar pines). It felt like comfort food, it felt like home. I hope they never change it.
If you are into trees and literature, check out this book, it is amazing!
I didn't bring my tripod to Greece, but I did manage to prop my camera up on a wall to get this shot of the bay at Mykonos. The original was very crooked -darn those non adjustable walls! Since I have been home I haven't had a chance to get out at night again. So It isn't the finest image - but it is of the much longed for night....
I have been saving my posts up since it has been a very busy month. I went to a conference, was on vacation, went to a workshop, threw a party and went to a graduation. I made images at all these events, some serious work, some for craft and some just for fun. So here is the first of my long delayed posts...
Last Christmas I gave my husband a gift certificate to for a half day racing lesson at Sears Point Raceway. In May he went up for a day of racing lessons and I went along to make some images. It was good practice using different techniques and pretty fun as I was allowed to shoot the final lap from the crow's nest!
This is Jason racing a straight away captured with panning.
Jason crosses the finish line. It was harder than I thought to get that final split second all lined up, just a fraction of a second off...
A long time ago, when my sister and I were traveling in Italy, I was reading and she wanted to talk. I was deep into Amy Tan's The Kitchen God's Wife when I responded - shhhh I am in China! Lately I find my mind wandering to India. Our short trip there and the images I took have left me musing on a series of images I would like to make. I find my myself thinking of the ideas underlining the project and the techniques I could use. It was such a striking and seductively new experience and a different way of working for me that it keeps me dreaming in color and wanting to be 12,000 miles away.
I just got back from spending the last couple of weeks in Delhi, India. It was an amazing experience. Everyday I went out, I felt like I was watching this crazy vivid technicolor hd movie. It was overwhelming, over stimulating and very exciting - every single day. You could spend whole days just sitting in the car watching the traffic go by. Buses, cars, trucks, tractors, wagons, rickshaws, auto rickshaws, motorcycles, bikes, pedestrians, cows, camels, elephants - everyone using the same road trying to get somewhere. It is hard to capture the scale and organized chaos of it all, but here are a few shots that I grabbed from the road. Grand theft Delhi would make millions!
I composed the image close and down low at eye level to distort the actual size giving it a bit of an unreal feel. It reminds me of some work by one of my favorite artist's Tracey Snelling. She does these amazing small sculptures of motels and houses with working lights and signs and then takes them out and photographs them in the real world.
I love the little discoveries you sometimes make if you just keep walking.....
